Health benefits of cold plunge therapy

Cold plunging (aka cryotherapy, cold water immersion, and ice baths) has been used for centuries by both professional athletes and the general public.

There are many health benefits to cold therapy, including but not limited to:

  • Decreased inflammation
  • Improved metabolism
  • Improved mental health
  • Better mental clarity
  • Improved sleep
  • Better mood
  • Faster muscle recovery
  • Improved blood circulation and lower blood pressure
  • Stronger immune system

Athletes like Floyd Mayweather and the NBA superstar LeBron James opt for cold temperatures after workouts because it helps their bodies recover quickly.

Think about it — you work out, get hot and sweaty, then take a cold plunge, ice bath, or a cold shower. It’s the perfect recipe for muscle recovery. Then you sleep in a nice cool room; your body temperature drops, your heart rate slows down and you enter dreamland faster than ever before!

Another way to take a cold plunge is after a hot sauna session. Now that your body is heated up and pretty much cooked, a cold plunge will give you a natural high and mental health boost that will take away stress, tension, and fatigue.

How cold should it be?

There are no strict rules when it comes to what temp the water should be.

Seasoned cold plungers jump into the tub filled with ice-cold water and ice cubes. For the less experienced, a water temperature between 55 and 65 degrees will be more than enough to provide the desired health benefits.

How long should the cold water therapy last?

This too is a matter of personal preference and experience. Some people say no more than 3 minutes while others say up to 15 minutes (for pros). We recommend starting with 1 minute and gradually working your way up.

The most important thing to focus on is how it makes you feel, what your body tells you. Always plunge into the water when you’re ready, not just because everyone else is doing it that way!

Health professionals recommend around 14-16 degrees Celsius (57 – 62 degrees Fahrenheit) for a jump in temperature, no longer than 2 minutes. This will give you a nice shock without sending your body into deep freeze!

The colder the water is, the less time you should spend inside it.
